This big heron is found in most of North America, and ranging south to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America. It feeds mainly on fish but can also eat shrimp, crabs, insects, rodents, frogs, reptiles and birds.
An all-white population is found in south Florida. It is unclear whether this is a color morph, a subspieces, or perhaps an entirely separate species.
Species name: Ardea herodias
